The Art of Movie Storyboards: Beyond the Beautiful Drawing

A storyboard can be visually appealing and practically informative. Read it for its contribution to a sequence as well as its qualities as an individual picture.

Follow the action across panels

Check whether the sequence explains who moves, where they go, and what changes. A striking panel contributes less when its relation to the next image is unclear.

Inspect economy

Ask which marks communicate depth, pose, and direction quickly. A few decisive lines can give more useful planning information than elaborate surface rendering.

Test a rough version

Reduce a panel to simple shapes and arrows where needed. Compare what information survives and what was only ornamental.
