The Art of Movie Storyboards

A storyboard translates a scene into decisions about viewpoint, action, and sequence. Read boards for the information they communicate to collaborators rather than judging them only as finished drawings.

Trace the camera

Identify framing, camera position, and any indicated movement. Ask whether the sequence gives the viewer a consistent understanding of space. A simple drawing can be effective if these choices are clear.

Find the decisive action

Each panel should show a change that matters. Compare a pose with the moment immediately before or after it to decide which communicates the action best.

Compare board and scene

When both are available, note changed framing, timing, or performance. Treat the board as a planning language rather than a promise that every detail must survive into the filmed result.
