The Citizen Journalist's Photography Handbook

Photographs of public events need clear context and careful handling. Work toward a legible visual account while respecting people, personal safety, and the limits of what one image can establish.

Keep an accurate record

Record the time, place, and relevant context in your own notes. Preserve the original file. Write captions that distinguish what you witnessed from information obtained elsewhere.

Photograph relationships

Combine an establishing view with details that explain the event. Avoid selecting only the most dramatic instant if it gives a misleading impression of the wider situation.

Edit transparently

Use adjustments that maintain the scene's meaning and identify substantial manipulation when relevant. A photograph can support an account without proving every claim surrounding it.
