The Photographer's Guide to Colour

Colour can organise attention, describe light, and connect a sequence. Learn to judge it relationally, using neighbouring colours and tonal structure rather than isolated saturation.

Find the dominant relationship

Identify the largest colour area and the smaller colour that competes with it. Ask whether that competition is useful. Simplify by changing the frame before changing every hue in an editor.

Separate colour and brightness

View a temporary monochrome version to inspect tonal structure. Return to colour and see what it adds. A palette can be attractive while hiding a weak distribution of light and dark.

Keep a consistent series

Compare skin tones, neutrals, and recurring objects across images. Adjust with the series in view so each photograph belongs to the same visual world without erasing genuine changes of light.
