The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga

Study Osamu Tezuka's work through the grammar of the comics page: gesture, staging, rhythm, and transitions. Close observation makes a more useful introduction than treating a reputation as a substitute for reading.

Look at changing scale

Compare a broad setting with a close view of a face or hand. Notice where the shift happens and how it affects emphasis. Page rhythm often depends on these changes of scale.

Trace character acting

Follow posture and expression across several panels. Ask which marks carry a change in feeling and which establish continuity. A recognisable design must also remain flexible enough to perform.

Use the edition's notes

Check translation, format, and credits before making historical claims. Reproduced pages give an opportunity for close reading, while the edition's documentation helps place that reading in context.
