Social Photography

Sharing a photograph adds questions of audience, context, and permission to the act of making it. Consider how an image travels and what its caption encourages others to assume.

Choose an audience

An image suitable for a private conversation may be unsuitable for a public page. Consider the people pictured and the setting before sharing. Obtain appropriate permission when the use calls for it.

Write a precise caption

Separate what the photograph shows from information you know through another source. Avoid a caption that makes the image appear to prove more than it can. Context should clarify rather than manufacture a story.

Build a coherent sequence

Select images with a clear relationship and remove repetitions. A small, thoughtful set is easier to understand than a stream whose only connection is the time it was posted.
