Creative Photography

Creative photography grows from a clear question and a willingness to test it. Set a small visual constraint, make a sequence, and use the results to decide where the idea should go next.

Choose one constraint

Work with one colour, one focal length, or one kind of shadow for a short session. The constraint gives otherwise unrelated frames something to argue with and makes your choices easier to recognise.

Change one variable

Move the subject, camera, or light separately. A controlled comparison reveals which change produces the effect you want. Keep the unsuccessful versions long enough to learn from them.

Name the visual idea

Describe the series without listing equipment or effects. If the idea depends entirely on an editing technique, explore whether composition, gesture, or sequencing could make the same thought more convincing.
