Jake Spicer: Drawing Practice and Useful Questions

A conversation about drawing is most useful when it leads back to observation. These questions provide a way to study drawing practice without presenting an invented interview.

Ask what is being observed

Separate the subject's visible relationships from a remembered formula. Compare proportions and negative spaces before adding detail.

Look at a working sequence

Where stages are available, identify the first structural choices and the later refinements. A finished drawing may hide the decisions that made it readable.

Test a short exercise

Draw the same subject twice with one change in approach. Compare the results and name what became clearer rather than simply choosing the more polished version.
