Drawing

Draw Cats in 15 Minutes

A short cat study becomes easier when you begin with weight and gesture. Observe the animal's resting pose, then build the drawing from a few connected masses rather than a catalogue of details.

Find the supporting shape

Locate where the body meets the surface and which limbs carry weight. Sketch the spine's direction and the largest body masses lightly. This gives the pose stability before ears, eyes, or fur are added.

Compare negative spaces

Look at the gaps around the tail, beneath the chin, and between the legs. Their shapes often expose a proportion error more clearly than staring at the outline alone.

Finish selectively

Use a few darker marks to clarify overlap and focal features. Suggest the direction of fur without covering every surface in strokes. Stop while the initial gesture still feels alive.
