Gary Spencer Millidge on Alan Moore: Reading a Comics Biography

Consider the biographer's task of selecting, arranging, and interpreting material about a comics creator. Read the narrative and its supporting images as related but distinct forms of evidence.

Inspect the selection

Notice which works or moments receive space. A biography necessarily chooses, and its selection shapes the reader's sense of a creative practice.

Follow a cited example

Compare a claim with the reproduced page or documented source that supports it. Check whether the example illustrates a method, an exception, or a broader pattern.

Compare visual and written accounts

An image can complicate a written description by showing a collaborator's contribution or a different emphasis. Keep those differences visible in your notes.
