Illustrated Book Study 36251: Material and Texture

Explore the relationship between a represented surface and the physical page that carries it. Texture can suggest material, scale, and the kind of attention an image invites.

Describe the marks

Distinguish drawn texture, photographed detail, and the visible surface of the print. These are different sources of visual information even when they appear together.

Compare near and far

View the image closely, then at an ordinary reading distance. Note which texture contributes to the form and which becomes a general tone.

Make a restrained study

Draw the same simple object with dense and selective texture. Compare how clearly each version explains material and shape.
