Illustrated Book Study 11293: The Page Spread

Study a two-page spread as a designed reading experience. Look at hierarchy, alignment, and the way pictures and text share the page.

Find the entry point

Identify where your eye goes first and what directs it there: size, contrast, or position. Compare that point with the information the page seems to consider most important.

Trace the next step

Follow the route from heading to image and text. Note places where the design offers competing directions or where a useful pause appears.

Sketch the structure

Draw the spread as a set of simple blocks. This exposes the main relationships without being distracted by the appeal of a particular image.
