The Underground Graffiti Sketchbook

A graffiti sketchbook is a place to develop lettering, rhythm, and colour on paper. Explore personal marks and visual structure through exercises that work in a lawful studio practice.

Build the letter skeleton

Draw a word using plain letterforms before adding width, overlap, or ornament. Preserve the main proportions long enough to understand what each change does to readability.

Control the rhythm

Compare the gaps between letters and the direction of repeated strokes. A word can feel energetic without making every letter equally elaborate. Use repetition and variation deliberately.

Test a colour study

Try two limited palettes on small copies of the same drawing. Check where the strongest contrast falls. Keep practice on paper or other surfaces where you have permission to work.
