Graphic Design: Pocket Essentials

Graphic design organises information into a readable hierarchy. Begin with the message and test how type, space, and imagery help a reader find their way.

Order the information

List the elements by importance before arranging them. Use size, placement, and spacing to make the hierarchy visible. A design cannot emphasise every item equally and remain easy to scan.

Use alignment purposefully

Choose a small number of relationships that hold the layout together. Repeated edges and consistent gaps help the eye move even when the design includes contrasting shapes.

Remove and compare

Make a simpler version by taking away an ornament or extra type style. Compare the two for clarity and tone. Retain complexity only where it contributes to the message.
