The Digital Designer's Jargon Buster

Design terminology is useful when it points to a visible or practical difference. Connect unfamiliar terms with examples, production choices, and the questions they help you ask.

Pixels and physical size

Distinguish an image's pixel dimensions from its printed dimensions. A file can look adequate on a small screen yet provide limited detail at a larger print size. Check the intended output before judging adequacy.

Vector and raster

Compare a shape described by paths with an image made from pixels. Scaling and editing behave differently in each. Choose a format according to the work's needs, not because one term sounds more professional.

Colour and output

RGB and CMYK describe different colour models. Confirm the workflow and destination before conversion, then inspect a proof. A glossary becomes valuable when it prevents a production misunderstanding.
